Lace, Strange Plants, and Sheep

Contemporary art and design are full of unusual combinations or interconnections and multiple perspectives.

One that caught my attention recently was this lace fence by the Dutch designer Joep Verhoeven, founder of Demakersven. I’ve read books about bobbin lace and looked at enlarged pictures. I’ve seen chain link fences innumerable times, yet never connected the two forms.

I would have never known about it except for Hilary Pfeifer’s wonderful writing on Bunny with an Artblog. She has a very distinctive voice and often visits and talks about a variety of exhibitions.

Her own sculptural work is based on showing many small views of one idea with the use of repetition and variation. This is a walk through of her most recent installation.

One of my favorites is another installation called Liminal Space, placed in a building well. Hilary uses the different ways in whic the space can be approached to create a work that looks very different depending on where you stand.

I was writing this entry and checking my twitter stream and discovered this. I just had to include it. Talk about an unexpected combination.
